The pictures above indicate where insulation is missing between the beams inside the ceiling.

This infrared image allows us to see moisture (which will show up cooler) inside a bathroom wall.  The photo on the right shows that this was not at all detectable outside the wall.  Thus infrared imaging gives us the power 
to "see through walls" without tearing up walls first.
